Canada’s International Education Strategy: Harnessing Our Knowledge Advantage to Drive Innovation and Prosperity sets targets to attract more international researchers and students to Canada; deepen the research links between Canadian and foreign educational institutions; and establish a pan-Canadian partnership with provinces/territories and all key education stakeholders, including the private sector. The strategy seeks to double the number of international students and researchers choosing Canada to 450,000 by the year 2022, and recruiting more students from China is a key part of achieving this goal.
In addition, the strategy provides funding to support student mobility between Canada and China through the Mitacs Globalink program. The program offers Chinese students the opportunity to experience Canada as a leading destination for research and innovation through paid internships.
